Nicholl Project

Planning for the kitchen renovation for the Nicholl's residence took a while - almost a year - simply because other things got in the way. After purchasing the house, they found out that re-doing the deck - not renovating the kitchen - needed to be the first renovation item on the list. Needless to say we kept the file open.

The kitchen area was burdened with a small kitchen and a heavy 2-column stucco "island" blocking the view to the harbour. After much examination and deliberation, we found we were able to completely remove this piece without any structural concerns. The design that was finally chosen for the kitchen incorporated removing the wall between the existing kitchen and a rear pantry storage closet that was very awkward to use.

The final product, after a few weeks of work, turned out beautifully. The cabinet door chosen was a 4" wide-frame solid cherry with a custom mahogany stain. The style of the door blends well with the linear post & beam construction of the house, and adds a little European flavour to the space.

The counter top they chose is "Brown Pearl" granite, a great looking material with a very unique pattern. The floor tiles are a white porcelain, lending a marble-like feel to the room. The stainless steel appliances complete the look of the kitchen, especially the substantive 48" Miele hood fan displayed prominently on the cooktop wall.

Some custom design options used in this kitchen include the practical "Magic Corner" unit for easy access to the back of corner cabinets, the stacked wall cabinet style to provide the door with the proper proportions in the room, and custom drawer/microwave/bookshelf cabinet to use the space as effectively as possible.

In full, this small space ended up giving the entire area an impressive style, by incorporating the style elements of the house and the needs of the clients.
